GM Just Unveiled a $20 Billion Buyback After Profits Jumped 32%

Key Takeaways

  • 🚗 GM beat forecasts. Q3 revenue was $50.0 billion and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were $3.70. Both came in above Wall Street estimates.
  • 💰 A huge buyback. GM finished a $6 billion buyback and approved a new $20 billion one. Its share count has fallen from about 1.2 billion at the end of 2023 to 849 million.
  • 📉 The stock fell anyway. Shares dropped about 5% in early trading on Tuesday. GM kept the middle of its full-year profit forecast at $15 billion, which disappointed investors.
  • 🔭 The forecast matters most. GM’s new full-year EPS range of $12.75–$13.75 has a midpoint of $13.25. Analysts had expected $13.41.
  • ⚠️ Honest catch: Cash flow is strong and the buyback is big. But costs are rising, US market share slipped and the international business barely made a profit.

The Short Version

General Motors had a strong quarter. It made more money than last year and beat Wall Street forecasts.

It also announced a new $20 billion share buyback.

And still, the stock fell about 5% in early trading.

Why? Investors care more about what comes next than about what just happened. GM did not raise its full-year profit forecast. That was enough to send the shares lower.

📊 The Numbers: A Strong Quarter

Here is what GM reported for July to September 2026, from its official release:

  • 💵 Revenue: $50.0 billion, up 2.9% from a year ago.
  • 🧾 Net income: $3.3 billion, up from $1.3 billion a year ago.
  • 📈 Adjusted EPS: $3.70, up 32% from $2.80.
  • 🏭 Adjusted operating profit: $4.1 billion, up nearly 22%.
  • 💧 Adjusted car-business free cash flow: $5.9 billion, up 40%.

Wall Street expected about $3.63 in EPS and about $48.7 billion in revenue, according to LSEG data reported by several outlets. So GM beat on both.

The star was North America. Profit there rose 43% to $3.59 billion, helped by big pickup trucks.

📉 So Why Did the Stock Fall?

Three reasons stood out.

  • 🎯 No upgrade. GM narrowed its full-year profit forecast to $14.5–$15.5 billion, from $14–$16 billion. The middle stayed at $15 billion. Investors wanted a raise.
  • 💸 Rising costs. GM expects about $2 billion in extra costs for materials, shipping and memory chips. It had earlier said “up to $2 billion”.
  • 🌍 Weak spots. US deliveries fell 5.5% and US market share slipped to 16.1% from 16.8%, Benzinga reported. GM’s international unit made just $28 million in adjusted profit.

High hopes also played a part. GM shares had risen about 43% over the past year before the results, according to Benzinga.

💰 What Is a $20 Billion Buyback?

A buyback is when a company uses its own cash to buy its own shares. Those shares are then cancelled.

  • 🍕 Fewer slices. With fewer shares, each remaining share owns a bigger slice of the company.
  • 📉 GM has done a lot of this. It had about 1.2 billion shares at the end of 2023. It had 849 million at the end of September. That is roughly 30% fewer.
  • 📏 The size. At about $79 a share, GM is worth about $67 billion. So $20 billion is close to a third of its value (our maths, using GM’s share count).
  • ⏳ No deadline. The buyback has no end date. GM can pause or stop it at any time.

GM also kept paying its dividend of $0.18 per share each quarter.

💡 The One Lesson

Share prices look forward, not back.

A great quarter is old news by the time it is reported. What moves the price is how the future looks against what investors already expected.

GM beat on the past three months. But its outlook for the full year was a little below what analysts had pencilled in. The market reacted to the outlook.

⚖️ The Honest Catch

The case for worry:

  • 💸 Costs are rising, and GM has not said they will ease.
  • 📉 GM is selling fewer cars in the US and losing a little market share.
  • 🌏 Its international and China businesses are much weaker than a year ago.
  • 🗣️ “Investor focus is likely to be on 2027 revisions and we don’t see results driving meaningful upside,” JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta said before the results, as quoted by Invezz.

The other side:

  • 💧 GM raised its full-year cash flow forecast to $11.5–$12.5 billion, from $9.5–$11.5 billion.
  • 🛻 Its North American profit margin rose to 8.7% from 6.2%.
  • 🔁 It keeps shrinking its share count, which lifts earnings per share over time.
  • 🔮 Management said it expects 2027 to beat 2026, if demand holds and costs ease, Stocktwits reported.

Analysts tracked by Benzinga have an average price target of $97. That is their view, not ours, and targets can be wrong.

🙋 What It Means for You

  • 🧠 Don’t chase the headline. “Earnings beat” does not mean “stock goes up”.
  • 🔭 Read the outlook. The forecast often matters more than the quarter.
  • 🧺 Spread your bets. One stock can fall 5% in a morning. A broad fund like VOO spreads that risk across 500 companies. See our beginner’s guide to VOO.

❓ FAQs

1. Why did GM stock fall after beating earnings?

GM did not raise the middle of its full-year profit forecast. Its new EPS range had a midpoint of $13.25, below the $13.41 analysts expected. Rising costs and weaker US market share also weighed on the shares.

2. How much did GM earn in Q3 2026?

GM reported revenue of $50.0 billion and net income of $3.3 billion. Adjusted EPS was $3.70, up 32% from a year ago.

3. What is GM’s $20 billion buyback?

It is a plan to buy back up to $20 billion of GM’s own shares. It has no end date, and GM can pause or stop it at any time. It follows a $6 billion buyback that GM has just finished.

4. Is GM stock a good buy after the drop?

There are two sides. Bulls point to strong cash flow, a big buyback and higher North American margins. Bears point to rising costs, falling US market share and a weak international business. Analysts tracked by Benzinga have an average target of $97, but targets are opinions and can be wrong. GM is an example to research, not a recommendation.

5. Can I buy GM shares from the UAE?

Yes. On Nemo.money you can buy fractional shares of GM from $1, with zero commission. Check the latest results and risks before you decide.

🏁 Final Thoughts

GM had one of its better quarters. It made more money, beat forecasts and promised to hand $20 billion back to shareholders through buybacks.

But the market wanted a better outlook, and it did not get one.

That is the lesson for every earnings season: the past quarter sets the scene, but the forecast moves the price.
