⚡ The Short Version
Jio is India's biggest mobile network. It has more than 524 million subscribers.
Now it is going public. The IPO could raise ₹30,213 crore at the top of the price band. That beats Hyundai Motor India's (NSE: HYUNDAI) record of about ₹27,859 crore from 2024.
Reliance Industries (NSE: RELIANCE) shares rose as much as 3.4% on Thursday on the news.
Here is the twist for US investors. Meta (META) and Google (GOOGL) bought into Jio in 2020. They still own about 17.7% of it. So the biggest IPO in India is also a story about two of the biggest US stocks.

📊 Jio IPO: The Numbers
- 💰 Issue size: up to ₹30,213 crore (nearly $3.2 billion)

- 📦 Lot size: 12 shares, so ₹13,428 at the top price
- 🗓️ Anchor bids: 19 October
- 🗓️ Public bidding: 21 to 23 October
- 🗓️ Expected listing: 28 October (tentative)
- 🏦 Valuation: about ₹10.3 lakh crore. Reuters put that at about $106 billion. Other reports say about $108 billion, at today's exchange rate.
- 💵 FY26 numbers: revenue of ₹1,46,885 crore (up 14.6%) and profit of ₹30,049 crore (up 15.1%)
🆕 Why This IPO Is Different
- 🆕 All new shares. Every share sold is new. Nobody is cashing out.
- 🏦 The money pays debt. About ₹27,500 crore goes to pay down borrowings at Jio's telecom arm.
- 🔁 The last two records were the opposite. Hyundai India (NSE: HYUNDAI) and LIC (NSE: LICI) were sales by existing owners. The company got none of that money.
- 👥 Reliance still controls it. Reliance Industries (NSE: RELIANCE) owned 66.43% before the IPO.
🇺🇸 The Meta and Google Angle
In 2020, during lockdown, Jio raised about $20 billion from global investors.
- 📘 Meta (META), then Facebook, paid ₹43,574 crore, or $5.7 billion, for 9.99%.
- 🔎 Google (GOOGL) paid ₹33,737 crore, or $4.5 billion, for 7.73%.
- 🤝 Others included KKR (NYSE: KKR), Silver Lake and General Atlantic.
Meta and Google are not selling any shares in this IPO. But the listing will put a public price on their stakes for the first time.
For Meta and Alphabet, these stakes are small next to their size. Meta alone is worth about $1.9 trillion. So Jio will not move these stocks much on its own. It is still a window into how US tech giants are betting on India.

💡 The One Lesson
Currency can quietly eat your returns.
In April 2020, ₹43,574 crore was worth $5.7 billion. Today the rupee trades near ₹95 per dollar. The same ₹43,574 crore is worth about $4.6 billion.
So Jio's value in rupees can go up a lot, while the dollar gain is much smaller. Reports say Meta (META) and Alphabet (GOOGL) face lower-than-expected dollar returns because the rupee has fallen.
If you earn in dirhams or dollars and invest in rupees, or the other way round, check both numbers. The rupee fell more than 7% against the dollar this year before the RBI stepped in. Our guide why the rupee keeps falling explains what that means for your salary and savings.
⚖️ The Honest Catch
The case for caution:
- 📉 The price came down. A Nomura (NYSE: NMR) note, reported on 15 October, cut its estimate of Jio's enterprise value to $118 billion from $133 billion.
- 🔗 Jio depends on its parent. The offer document says 77.08% of FY26 revenue came from prepaid plans sold through Reliance Retail.
- 💸 Growth may come from price hikes. Nomura expects higher tariffs, not new users, to drive future profit.
- 🎲 Grey market numbers are not real prices. Reports cite unofficial premiums of between ₹160 and ₹220. It is not regulated and can vanish by listing day.
The other side:
- 📶 It is the market leader. Jio has 524 million-plus users and a 51.9% EBITDA margin in FY26.
- 📈 Profit is growing. Net profit rose 15.1% in FY26.
- 🧾 Less debt after the IPO. Most of the cash goes to paying down loans.

FAQs
1. When does the Jio IPO open and close?
Public bidding runs from 21 to 23 October 2026. Anchor investors bid on 19 October. Allotment is expected on 26 October. Listing is expected on 28 October, but the date is tentative.
2. Can I buy Jio shares on Nemo.money?
No. Jio will list on India's NSE and BSE, not in the US. Nemo.money offers US-listed stocks and ETFs. You can research US companies linked to the story, such as Meta (META) and Alphabet (GOOGL).
3. How much of Jio do Meta and Google own?
Meta (META) owns 9.98% and Google (GOOGL) owns 7.73%, about 17.7% together. They bought in 2020 for $5.7 billion and $4.5 billion. They are not selling shares in this IPO.
4. Is the Jio IPO a good buy?
There are two sides. Supporters point to 524 million-plus users, a 15.1% rise in FY26 profit and less debt after the IPO. Critics point to the lower valuation, heavy reliance on Reliance Retail for sales, and growth that may depend on price hikes. Read the offer document and decide what fits your goals.
5. Why does the rupee matter for this IPO?
Jio is priced in rupees. If the rupee falls against the dollar, a gain in rupees shrinks in dollars. Meta's (META) 2020 stake cost ₹43,574 crore, which was $5.7 billion then and is about $4.6 billion today.
🏁 Final Thoughts
Jio's IPO is a big moment for Indian markets. It is also a reminder that US tech giants have real money riding on India.
Remember the lesson. A win in rupees is not always a win in dollars. Look at both before you invest.
