Key Takeaways
- 📈 TSMC's sales hit a record NT$1.494 trillion from July to September 2026. That's up 50.9% on last year, according to TSMC's monthly figures.
- 🎯 That is about 2% above the top of TSMC's own forecast (US$44.6–45.8 billion at NT$32 per dollar).
- 📉 But on Monday, chip stocks in Korea fell. SK Hynix dropped about 3% and Samsung nearly 3% on renewed "AI bubble" fears.
- 🗓️ TSMC reports full Q3 results on Thursday 15 October at 2pm Taiwan time (10am UAE, 11:30am India).
- ⚖️ Honest catch: record sales are already known. On Thursday, the share price will likely react more to profit margins and next-quarter guidance than to revenue.

The Short Version
TSMC makes most of the world's advanced chips. Nvidia, Apple and AMD all rely on it. (Remember Nvidia's $96.2bn quarter? Most of those chips were made by TSMC.)
Last Thursday, TSMC published its September sales. Together with July and August, that gave its biggest quarter ever.
Then the mood flipped. A report questioned how fast AI companies are really earning money. Chip stocks wobbled from New York to Seoul.
So which is it? Boom or bubble? Let's look at the numbers.

🧾 The Numbers TSMC Reported
These come straight from TSMC's 8 October revenue release:
- 💰 September sales: NT$511.86 billion. That's up 54.6% on September 2025.
- ➖ Versus August: down 0.6%. That's a small dip after a record August (NT$514.81 billion).
- 📦 Q3 total: NT$1,494.24 billion. That's +17.6% on Q2 and +50.9% on Q3 2025.
- 📅 January to September: NT$3,898.73 billion, +41.1% on last year.
In dollars? TSMC hasn't said yet. At the exchange rates used in news reports, Q3 works out to roughly US$46.7 billion. That's an estimate, not a reported figure.
🎯 Why "Beat the Forecast" Matters
In July, TSMC told investors to expect Q3 sales of US$44.6–45.8 billion. It assumed NT$32 per dollar.
- 🧮 At that rate, the top of the range is about NT$1,466 billion.
- ✅ TSMC delivered NT$1,494 billion. That's roughly 2% above the top end (our calculation from TSMC's figures).
- 📊 Analysts polled by LSEG expected about NT$1.46 trillion, as reported by Reuters.
When a company beats its own forecast, it often means demand came in stronger than even management expected.
🤖 So Why the AI Jitters?
Two things hit the mood last week:
- 📰 On 8 October, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI's annual revenue rate was nearing US$50 billion. That's well below the roughly $68–70 billion figure that had been talked about earlier.
- 📰 A day later, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI expects US$70 billion or more by the end of 2026.
The Nasdaq fell 1.25% on Thursday, its worst day since mid-August. It bounced back 0.6% on Friday. (We broke down that selloff here: OpenAI Said $50 Billion, Not $68 Billion.)
Korea's market was shut on Friday for a holiday. So on Monday it caught up in one go. The KOSPI fell around 2–2.6% by midday. Foreign investors sold chip giants SK Hynix and Samsung.
That happened even though Samsung had just forecast a record quarterly profit.
💡 The One Lesson: Sales Tell You the Past. Prices Bet on the Future.
The stock market is a forecasting machine.
- 🔙 TSMC's Q3 sales are history. Investors already know them.
- 🔮 The share price depends on what comes next: margins, guidance, and whether AI customers keep spending.
- 🧩 So a company can post record sales and still see its shares fall. That happens when people had already expected the good news, or when they worry about what follows.
- 🔁 We saw the same thing two weeks ago: Micron posted a record $54 billion quarter, and the stock barely moved.
TSMC's US-listed shares (TSM) closed at US$453.31 on Friday, down about 1% on the day.
👀 What to Watch on Thursday
- 📏 Gross margin. TSMC guided 65–67%. It made 67.7% in Q2. A lower margin can matter more than higher sales.
- 💵 Q3 sales in US dollars. How do they compare with the US$44.6–45.8 billion guidance?
- 🔭 Q4 guidance. This is the big one for the share price.
- 🧠 AI comments. Watch what management says about demand for advanced chips (2-nanometer and 3-nanometer).
- 💸 Profit. Analysts polled by LSEG expect net profit of about NT$740.8 billion, up about 64%, as reported by Reuters.
⚖️ The Honest Catch
Here's the case for caution:
- 🎈 Expectations are high. When everyone expects a beat, a beat may not lift the price. A small miss on margins or guidance could hurt.
- 🏗️ Customer concentration. TSMC's growth leans heavily on a handful of AI chip buyers. If they slow spending, TSMC feels it.
- 📉 The monthly dip. September was 0.6% below August. That's small, but growth isn't a straight line.
- 💱 Currency effects. TSMC reports in Taiwan dollars. Moves in the exchange rate can flatter or shrink the dollar figures.
- 🌏 Location risk. Most of TSMC's advanced production is in Taiwan. Investors often price in that geographic risk.
And here's the other side:
- 🚀 Demand is real today. A 50.9% jump in quarterly sales is not a forecast. It's money already booked.
- 🧱 Hard to replace. Few companies can make the most advanced chips at TSMC's scale.
Both can be true at once. That's why it pays to do your own research.
🙋 What It Means for You
- 🧭 Don't buy or sell because of a headline. "Record sales" and "AI bubble" are both headlines.
- 📅 Know the date. Big moves often happen around results. Thursday 15 October is TSMC's day.
- 🧺 Think about spread. Owning one chip stock is a concentrated bet. Some investors prefer funds that hold many companies. Even the S&P 500 is now unusually reliant on about 10 AI stocks.
- 🔍 Names to research: TSMC (TSM), Nvidia (NVDA) and ASML (ASML, results Wednesday 14 Oct). Each is an example to research, not a recommendation. New to ASML? Read What Is ASML? The "Hidden Monopoly" Powering the AI Chip Boom.
