The short version
Reliance Industries rose about 8% on Monday, to an intraday high near ₹1,259, taking its market value above ₹17 lakh crore. It was the stock's biggest single-day gain since April 2020.
The driver was refining. EBITDA from the oil-to-chemicals business, which Reliance calls O2C, rose 67.9% year on year.
If that sounds familiar, it should. We wrote last week about Shell's record refining margins and Exxon's refining earnings roughly doubling while its oil business fell 20%. Three companies, three continents, one quarter, the same cause.
The headline numbers: consolidated profit of about ₹29,550 crore, up around 33.8%, with EBITDA of ₹62,409 crore, up 23.9%. Both records.
And Jio reported for the first time since listing. Revenue of ₹47,485 crore, up 11.3%, with EBITDA up 16.6%. Jio Platforms shares rose about 3.1%.
The weak spot was retail, which came in below what analysts expected.
One thing to be clear about: Reliance trades on India's NSE and BSE. It is not available through Nemo.money, which offers US-listed stocks and ETFs. This post is here because the pattern is worth understanding.

What Reliance reported
- 💰 Consolidated profit: about ₹29,550 crore, up roughly 33.8%, a record.
- 📊 EBITDA: ₹62,409 crore, up 23.9%, also a record.
- ⛽ O2C EBITDA: up 67.9% year on year. This is the number that moved the shares.
- 📱 Jio Platforms revenue: ₹47,485 crore, up 11.3%, with EBITDA up 16.6% to ₹21,879 crore.
- 🛒 Retail came in below expectations, by around 6% on one brokerage's estimate.
- 📈 Market value above ₹17 lakh crore, with roughly ₹1.25 lakh crore added in a day.
Reliance was the single biggest contributor to the Sensex and Nifty 50's gains on Monday, which is what happens when the largest company in an index moves 8%.
What O2C actually means
Oil-to-chemicals. It covers refining crude oil into fuels, and converting it into petrochemicals: the raw materials for plastics, packaging, textiles and much else.
A refining margin is the gap between what a refiner pays for crude and what it receives for petrol, diesel and jet fuel. When that gap widens, refiners earn more, whether or not crude itself is rising.
That gap widened sharply this quarter, which is why Reliance's O2C EBITDA rose 67.9% while the business itself did nothing structurally different.
Jio's first report as a listed company
This was Jio Platforms' first set of results since its record-breaking market debut, which raised about ₹30,213 crore in India's largest ever IPO.
- 📈 Revenue up 11.3% to ₹47,485 crore.
- 💵 EBITDA up 16.6% to ₹21,879 crore, so profitability improved faster than revenue.
- 📱 Quarterly profit up around 14%.
- 📊 Jio Platforms shares rose about 3.1% on the day.
Margins improving faster than revenue is the detail worth noting. It suggests the business is getting more profitable per customer rather than simply adding customers, which is a different and generally more durable kind of growth.
Three continents, one quarter, one cause
This is the third time in eight days we have written the same sentence about a different company.
- 🇬🇧 Shell: record refining margins, $10.8 billion of adjusted earnings, buyback raised to $5 billion.
- 🇺🇸 Exxon: refining earnings roughly doubled to about $9 billion while its oil production business earned 20% less.
- 🇮🇳 Reliance: O2C EBITDA up 67.9%, driving record group profit and an 8% share move.
When three competitors on three continents report the same unusual result within days, it is a market condition, not company skill. That distinction matters, because conditions revert and skill does not.
And the same input looks completely different from other seats:
- ✈️ Four US airlines cut their 2026 profit forecasts on fuel costs, with American reporting record revenue and still posting a loss.
- 🚗 UAE drivers are paying roughly 70% more than February.
One commodity. Five posts. Five different outcomes. A cost for one company is revenue for another, and both are true at the same time.
Why this one matters more for readers here
Because Reliance is the version of this story closest to home.
For readers with family or financial ties to India, Reliance is not an abstract energy major. It is the largest company in the index, it owns Jio, it runs the retail chains, and its 8% move was the biggest single contributor to Monday's rally in Indian markets.
It also shows how a conglomerate absorbs a cycle. Refining boomed, retail disappointed, telecom grew steadily. The group result was a record because one division's exceptional quarter carried the others.
That is the argument for and against conglomerates in one sentence. Diversification smooths the ride, and it also means you never own a pure version of the thing that is working.
What could go wrong
- 🔄 Refining margins are cyclical, and this quarter was exceptional. A 67.9% rise in O2C EBITDA is not a new normal. The same conditions that produced it can reverse.
- 🛒 Retail disappointed, coming in below brokerage estimates. It is a large part of the group and the part most exposed to Indian consumer spending.
- 📉 The shares are still well below their high. The 52-week range runs from about ₹1,152 to ₹1,612, so even after an 8% day the stock sits closer to the bottom of that range than the top.
- 📱 Jio now reports separately and publicly, which means its performance is visible in a way it was not before. That cuts both ways.
- 🚫 And you cannot buy it here. Reliance trades on the NSE and BSE, not on US exchanges. Anyone offering access through an unusual route deserves scepticism.
Reliance and Jio Platforms are examples to understand, not recommendations.
What should investors take from this?
When the same unusual result appears at several competitors at once, look for the shared cause.
Shell, Exxon and Reliance did not independently become better at refining in the same three months. A market condition lifted all of them. Knowing that tells you what to watch next: not the companies, but the margin.
Three habits:
- 🔍 Read the segment breakdown. Reliance's record came from one division having an exceptional quarter while another disappointed. The group number hid both.
- 🌍 Check whether a result is skill or conditions. If competitors on other continents report the same thing, it is conditions.
- ⚖️ Understand what a conglomerate actually gives you. Smoother results, and never a pure holding in the part that is working, which is the same trade-off an index fund makes across hundreds of companies.
