The short version
Grand Theft Auto VI launches 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) stock is down about 21% over the past year and closed at $203.69.
The launch is not the problem. The problem is that everyone has known about it since 2023. Share prices move on surprises. There are none left.
What investors are actually worried about: the year after. A record year makes the next one look terrible by comparison. That's the "earnings cliff", and it's the whole story.

When does GTA 6 come out?
19 November 2026. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
A PC version is expected later. No date has been confirmed.
The game has been delayed twice: from 2025, then from May 2026. Rockstar said it needed more time for quality. Take-Two has reaffirmed 19 November repeatedly.
How big is this launch?
Bigger than any film opening this year. For scale, gaming is already a bigger industry than movies and music combined. Three numbers make the case:
- 13% — GTA 6's share of all game demand, per industry attention data. Most other autumn titles sit near 2%.
- 22% — the rise in PlayStation 5 sales as the launch approached, credited to the game.
- $8.0-8.2 billion — Take-Two's own net bookings forecast for the year ending March 2027. That would be a company record.
Rival publishers moved their release dates to avoid the window. CEO Strauss Zelnick has called pre-orders "exceptional".
Why is Take-Two stock down 21%?
Four reasons:
- The news is three years old. Announced 2023. Anyone who wanted exposure has had years to buy.
- Delays cost credibility. Three dates have moved. Each slip pushed revenue later while costs kept running.
- The PC version is unconfirmed. A rumour about its timing knocked about 5% off the stock in one session this month.
- The earnings cliff. Fiscal 2027 will be enormous. Fiscal 2028 has no GTA in it.
That fourth point is the one that matters.
What is an earnings cliff?
When one product creates a huge spike in revenue, the following year is measured against it. Even a healthy company then reports a big decline.
You see it everywhere: film studios after a blockbuster, drugmakers after a patent expires, builders after a mega project ends.
Share prices look years ahead. So investors are already pricing fiscal 2028, not the record coming in 2027.
How companies fix it: recurring revenue. GTA Online has earned money for more than a decade after the last game launched. A long tail turns a spike into an income stream.
What do analysts say?
They disagree, and both cases hold together. These are opinions, not facts.
- Jefferies: the upside is still unpriced. Target $300.
- Citi: if development cost came in under about $1.5 billion, the leftover budget could fund another major release, possibly a new Red Dead in 2027 or 2028. That would soften the cliff. Rockstar has announced nothing.
- The bears: fiscal 2028 is an unwinnable comparison, whatever the game sells.
Which other stocks are exposed to GTA 6?
- 🎮 Sony (SONY) — primary console partner. PS5 sales up 22%. Takes a cut of every store sale.
- 🪟 Microsoft (MSFT) — same exposure via Xbox, but tiny inside a company that size.
- 🎧 Turtle Beach (HEAR) — headsets and accessories. Analysts flagged possible upside after release.
- 🧱 Roblox (RBLX) — its creators reliably build copycats of whatever is popular. Reports 29 October.
- 🍄 Nintendo (NTDOY) — excluded. The game isn't coming to Switch, so it competes for the same wallets without the title.

Is the games industry growing?
No. It's shrinking while attention concentrates.
- US game spending fell about 9% in August and 1% in September.
- Electronic Arts (EA) is cutting around 400 jobs and closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect.
- Meanwhile one title takes 13% of all demand.
Fewer games, bigger budgets, longer lives. The same pattern that reshaped streaming is arriving in gaming.
What could go wrong?
- Launch problems. Server failures, technical issues and refund waves are real risks on day one.
- Another delay. Nothing suggests one. The date has still moved three times.
- Pricing. The game's price is unannounced. It affects both unit sales and revenue.
- The cliff is unresolved. Nobody outside the company knows what fiscal 2028 holds.
- Gaming is hit-driven. A few titles carry a whole year. That cuts both ways.
What should investors take from this?
One question, reusable anywhere: when a company is heading into an exceptional year, what does the next one look like without the exceptional thing in it?
If management can't answer that, the share price will answer it for them, usually by falling before the good news arrives.
Three more habits:
- Look for recurring revenue under a one-off event. A spike with a tail is a different business.
- Map the ecosystem. Console makers and accessory firms carry exposure without all the risk.
- Consider the index route. Most of these companies sit inside broad tech funds, so a diversified fund gives you the sector without a single-title bet.
This is the same mechanism we've documented all month: a cancer vaccine hit its goal and the stock fell 18%; Boeing won a six-year certification and moved half a percent. Price reflects expectation, not event.
