Alaska Air has bought Hawaiian Airlines, which traded under the name Hawaiian Holdings Inc, in a huge deal today for US$1.9 billion - $1 billion in cash, and taking on $900 million of Hawaiian Holdings’ debt. The move will strengthen Alaska Air’s position as a leading US airline, and will also expand its reach outside the US, particularly as Hawaiian Airlines has a number of flights from Hawaii to Asian countries. Together, the two companies fly to 138 destinations.

Analysts think Alaska Air Group is a ‘Buy’ overall, due to several other factors as well as the new merger. Yesterday, it raised its third-quarter 2024 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) guidance from $1.40-$1.60 up to $2.15-$2.25.
Fuel prices also seem to be going down, so Alaska Air’s guidance also said estimated fuel expenses for Q3 were dropping from $2.85-$2.95 per gallon to $2.60-$2.70, helping to cut costs.

Alaska Airlines also wholly owns aircraft handling services company, McGee Air Services. Alaska Air Group was formed in 1985.
